Though majority of slaves had no choice but to accept their situation, there were those who did not.  Some like Nat Turner led a rebellion that killed a lot of people.  Others like Dredd Scott fought in the courts for his freedom.  There were those like Frederick Douglass who fled to the North and joined the abolition movement to end slavery.  Eventually the Civil made it possible to abolish slavery both in the North and South.
